Three Things I Learned This Week

THREE THINGS I LEARNED THIS WEEK:

1. I learned that cows can climb stairs fairly easily, but usually avoid them because they have great difficulty climbing down because of poor depth perception and the makeup of their body.

2. The book I have just finished is the #1 trade paperback seller this week. It is titled Theo of Golden by Allen Levi and is worth reading.

3. Plans are underway for a Christmas market in downtown Springfield beginning in 2027, which should add to the holiday activities for all of us.

Livestock behavior expert Temple Grandin reports that cattle have a visual field exceeding 300 degrees, but their ability to judge depth at ground level while moving with their heads up is probably poor. This can cause cattle to stop or refuse to cross shadows, drains, puddles and changes in flooring, helping explain why going down steps can be especially difficult.

Theo of Golden is Allen Levi’s first novel and was ranked No. 1 on the Publishers Weekly trade paperback bestseller list released July 30. The book can be purchased through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Bookshop.org and other booksellers.

Downtown Springfield Inc. is planning a German-style Christkindlmarket on the Old State Capitol Plaza beginning in 2027. The market would likely operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas, while the existing downtown Holiday Walks will continue.
