Capital Township is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Capital Township Board following the retirement of Trustee Ken Leonard. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, and the position will be filled by appointment of the Capital Township Board.

Leonard recently stepped down after years of service to the township. Capital Township Supervisor Joe Aiello thanked Leonard for his work on behalf of residents, saying, “Ken was service minded with a passion for our clients, his knowledge and commitment will be missed.”

In addition to his role in township government, Leonard is widely known in the community for his long career in education and athletics. He served for decades as the head football coach at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School, where he became one of the most successful coaches in Illinois high school football history and a familiar figure to generations of Springfield families.

Capital Township provides a range of services to residents, including general assistance for individuals and families facing financial hardship. The township helps administer aid for basic needs such as rent, utilities, and employment assistance, and trustees play a key role in overseeing those programs and guiding township policy.

Applicants for the trustee position must be registered voters, reside within Capital Township, and belong to the same political party as the previous officeholder, which is the Republican Party. Interested individuals should submit a resume and cover letter to the Capital Township Supervisor at the Sangamon County Complex, 200 South Ninth Street, Room 109, Springfield, or by email to Joe.Aiello@sangamonil.gov.
