[This story is part of Weekend on the Road, a monthly series highlighting Midwest getaways within six hours of Sangamon County. Each month, we’ll feature a new destination that’s close enough for a quick trip — and just far enough to feel like you’re really away.]

Just a 2-hour and 15-minute drive south from Springfield, Murphysboro offers a quiet change of scenery in the heart of Shawnee Wine Country. For travelers looking for a weekend that moves at a slower pace, the southern Illinois town brings together scenic views, local wineries and easy access to some of the region’s most memorable outdoor spaces.

Murphysboro is especially appealing for visitors who want a getaway built around relaxation rather than a packed schedule. The area’s vineyards and peaceful surroundings make it a natural fit for wine lovers, couples, small groups or anyone looking to spend a few days outside of their normal routine. It is close enough for a quick weekend trip, but far enough from central Illinois to feel like a true break.

A good place to start is Starview Vineyards, where visitors can enjoy local wine while taking in sweeping views of the Shawnee National Forest. The setting gives the experience much of its appeal. Whether someone knows exactly what they like in a wine or is simply interested in trying something new, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. It is the kind of stop where the view, the conversation and the slower pace are just as much a part of the visit as the glass itself.

The surrounding wine country also helps shape the feel of the trip. Instead of a fast-moving vacation built around long lines or crowded attractions, Murphysboro offers a more laid-back kind of weekend. Visitors can spend part of the day at a winery, take in the scenery and still have time to enjoy the outdoors without feeling rushed.

For those who want to add some hiking to the trip, Giant City State Park is just a short drive from town. The park is known for its towering rock formations and hidden ravines, giving visitors a chance to experience some of the natural beauty that makes southern Illinois distinct. For people used to the flatter landscape of central Illinois, the change in terrain can be part of what makes the trip feel special.

The Trillium Trail is one of the best ways to explore the park. The moderate hike gives visitors a closer look at the area’s geological features while also offering impressive views along the way. It is a good option for travelers who want to be active without turning the weekend into a difficult outdoor expedition. The park also provides a peaceful setting for picnicking and birdwatching, making it easy to spend a few hours there before heading back into town.

Beyond the wineries and trails, Murphysboro has the kind of small-town charm that can make a weekend trip feel easy and unforced. The pace is slower, the surroundings are scenic and the visit can be shaped around simple pleasures: a glass of wine, a walk through the woods, a picnic in the park or a quiet afternoon away from the normal demands of home.

The town is also home to the Murphysboro Apple Festival, held every September. The festival is a local favorite and features family-friendly activities, food vendors and a parade. For travelers looking ahead to a fall visit, the event offers another reason to make the drive south.

With its mix of wine country, outdoor recreation and small-town hospitality, Murphysboro makes a strong case for a weekend away. It is close enough to reach without spending the whole day in the car, but offers enough scenery and quiet space to make the trip feel worthwhile.
