Springfield area residents flying to Chicago will soon enjoy greater convenience and comfort thanks to recent upgrades announced by American Airlines. Beginning October 7, passengers traveling between Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) will benefit from an improved flight schedule and the introduction of a larger aircraft.

The new schedule includes the reinstatement of the early morning departure from Springfield, allowing travelers to reach O’Hare by 7:16 a.m.—ideal for catching connecting flights across the country or abroad. The full flight schedule is already live and available for booking. Departures from Springfield are now set for 6:00 a.m. and 2:12 p.m., while return flights from Chicago will depart at 12:39 p.m. and 10:12 p.m. All times are listed in Central Time. The afternoon flight from Springfield will see a slight schedule adjustment in November to better accommodate west coast connections.

Alongside the updated schedule, American Airlines is also introducing a more spacious aircraft for the route. The new 65-seat Embraer E-170 jet replaces the previous 50-seat model, representing a 30% increase in capacity. The upgraded aircraft will offer a first-class cabin and improved amenities, significantly enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

Frank J. Vala, Chair of the Springfield Airport Authority Board of Commissioners, praised the improvements, stating, “We are thrilled that American Airlines has brought back the popular early morning departure. The new flight schedule and larger aircraft will surely enhance the passenger experience and provide greater opportunities for local business, governmental, and leisure travel.” He emphasized the importance of supporting regional air service, noting the challenges smaller markets face in maintaining flight connectivity in the post-COVID era.

Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, named the 2020 Primary Airport of the Year by the Illinois Department of Transportation, continues to be a vital asset to the regional economy.

According to a 2021 economic impact study, the airport contributes $370.8 million annually to the local economy and supports over 2,600 jobs. The facility is home to several key tenants, including the Illinois Air National Guard’s 183rd Wing, StandardAero, and the IDOT Division of Aeronautics, among others. The terminal also houses the Sky Club, a membership-based lounge for frequent travelers.

Springfield’s airport currently offers daily service to Chicago through American Airlines, as well as flights to Florida destinations through Allegiant and Breeze Airways. For booking information, travelers can visit www.aa.com or learn more about the airport at www.FlySPI.com.
