Capital Airport Marks 21 Years of Financial Excellence

The Springfield Airport Authority received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2023. This award is the highest recognition for governmental accounting and financial reporting, signifying a significant accomplishment.


Frank J. Vala, Chair of the Springfield Airport Authority Board of Commissioners, stated, “The Authority has received this award each and every year for over two decades; this undoubtedly demonstrates the Authority’s long-term commitment to transparency, truthfulness, and accuracy in our financial reporting responsibilities. This further emphasizes Springfield Airport Authority’s enduring core attributes of being innovative, resourceful, and open with our financial performance.


The Authority’s annual financial report illustrates our continued commitment to having an entrepreneurial approach that embraces ingenuity, forward-thinking, operational efficiency, and budgetary discipline.” Chair Vala concluded, “Under the leadership of Mark Hanna and Ken Boyle, the Authority would not continue to receive this significant achievement. Congratulations are due to the entire Authority staff, as this accomplishment and earned recognition is a direct reflection on their professionalism, expertise, and diligence.”


The Authority has won this award for 21 consecutive years. To be awarded, a government entity must publish a well-organized, easily readable annual financial report that meets GAAP and legal standards. The FY2023 report can be viewed at FlySPI.com.
