College Costs in Illinois Drive Students Out of State

As high school students across Illinois prepare for college, many are facing the daunting reality of hefty tuition and related expenses. This financial burden significantly influences their decisions on where to enroll, including whether to study in or out of state.

A recent study by the Illinois Policy Institute (IPI) highlights the financial challenges for students wishing to attend public universities within Illinois. The study reveals that Illinois students face an average in-state tuition bill of $14,993 for a four-year program. This figure ranks Illinois as the third most expensive state for public university tuition, trailing only New Hampshire and Vermont.

While financial aid programs exist, they often cater to limited subsets of students, leaving many middle-class families without sufficient support. Consequently, these families often have to pay the full cost of attendance, making Illinois public universities a costly option.

The high tuition rates are prompting many Illinois high school graduates to seek more affordable education options out of state. States like Florida and North Carolina offer significantly lower in-state tuition, with average bills of $4,513 and $7,337, respectively. This disparity drives students away from Illinois, contributing to the state's ongoing population decline as many of these students do not return after graduation.

Many officials believe the financial pressures on Illinois students and their families underscore the need for more accessible and affordable higher education options within the state to retain its young talent and counteract population loss.
