Travelers flying out of Springfield will soon have more convenient options as American Airlines expands service at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport. Beginning October 7, the carrier will restore its early morning 6:00 a.m. departure to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, allowing central Illinois passengers easier access to same-day flights across the country and abroad. Additional afternoon and evening departures will also be added, giving travelers greater flexibility in planning their trips.
American Airlines is also upgrading its Springfield route to larger 65-seat Embraer E-170 jets, replacing the current 50-seat aircraft. The new planes will boost passenger capacity and introduce a premium cabin, offering improved comfort and amenities.
In support of these enhancements, the Sangamon County Board approved a resolution at its September 9 meeting reaffirming its commitment to the airport and encouraging residents to “Fly SPI First.” Board leaders emphasized that each ticket purchased out of Springfield strengthens the regional economy and helps ensure continued reliable air service close to home.
Springfield Airport Authority Chair Frank J. Vala welcomed the changes, noting that the restored early-morning flight and upgraded jets will “enhance the passenger experience and provide greater opportunities for local business, governmental, and leisure travel.”
