Human Remains Found Following a Springfield House Fire

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon has confirmed the recovery and identity of human remains from a home that was involved in a structure fire in Springfield.

The Springfield Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a home in the 900 block of North 10th Street on May 19, 2024. The Sangamon County Coroner was notified on June 7, 2024, that human remains were discovered in the home. Once at the home, the Sangamon County Coroner recovered the remains on both June 7 and June 8.

On June 10, an autopsy was done, and the remains were examined by a Forensic Pathologist. The remains were determined to be that of a male.

On June 12, 2024, specimens from the remains recovered were submitted to the Illinois State Police for DNA analysis. The results of this testing yielded a scientific positive identification of Jeffrey Davis, 21, of Springfield.

The cause and manner of death continue to be under investigation and are pending additional studies.
