Illinois residents can now add a digital version of their driver’s license to their iPhone, marking a significant advancement in the state’s effort to modernize how identification is carried and used. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias unveiled the new feature during a press event in Chicago, calling it “a game-changer for Illinois residents” and highlighting its focus on convenience, privacy, and security.
The rollout allows eligible drivers to open Apple Wallet, select the option to add a driver’s license, and follow on-screen prompts to authenticate and upload their digital ID. State officials said support for Google and Samsung devices will follow, ensuring broader access across all major mobile platforms.
Giannoulias and Illinois Liquor Control Commission Director Lisa Gardner emphasized that the digital ID system is expected to significantly reduce fraudulent identification by relying on secure, encrypted technology rather than easily altered physical cards. They said the change should strengthen security at bars, restaurants, airports, and other locations where IDs are routinely checked.
The digital license will be accepted at participating venues and at airports for identity verification, though officials stressed that the traditional plastic license will remain valid and available. The new feature serves as an additional option for residents who prefer to keep essential documents on their smartphones.
State leaders encouraged users to ensure their devices are updated and to follow the verification steps carefully during setup. With the launch underway, Illinois joins a growing number of states adopting mobile identification, marking a new chapter in how drivers interact with everyday services and secure access points.
