Tucked away in the heart of Cass County, Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area offers a sprawling 16,550 acres of outdoor adventure, wildlife conservation, and family-friendly recreation. Once the site of a coal mining operation, the land has been transformed into one of Illinois’ premier outdoor destinations.
The land that now makes up Jim Edgar Panther Creek was once home to the Site M coal mine, operated by the Peabody Coal Company. After mining operations ceased, the state acquired the land in the 1990s and launched a massive restoration project. Under the direction of then-Governor Jim Edgar, the area was revitalized with a focus on conservation, habitat restoration, and outdoor recreation. In 2001, the site was officially named after Edgar, recognizing his contributions to Illinois’ natural resources and commitment to expanding public lands.
Today, Jim Edgar Panther Creek stands as a model for successful land reclamation, featuring rolling prairies, dense forests, wetlands, and lakes that provide habitats for countless species of wildlife.
