Man Killed in Springfield Shooting

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, at approximately 11:31 am, the Springfield Police Department responded to the 700 block of N. 5th Street for a report of shots fired. Shot Spotter alerts were also received at that time. When officers arrived on the scene, they located a male on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon later confirmed the death of the 45-year-old Sammie Tyrone McClinton, he transported from the scene to the HSHS St. John’s Hospital emergency room. McClinton was pronounced deceased by hospital staff shortly after his arrival at 12:03 pm.
At approximately 1:00 p.m. that afternoon., detectives located the suspect in the 2700 block of S. MacArthur, and he was taken into custody without incident. Shelton A. Woolridge (male, 27 years old), of Springfield was arrested and taken to the Sangamon County Jail. The firearm used in the homicide has been recovered by detectives.
On July 26, 2024, Woolridge was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm by Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser.
