Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher has announced the launch of the 2026 Springfield Minority Business Institute (SMBI), a new multi-week educational initiative designed to support minority-owned businesses and nonprofit organizations.
According to the City, the program will be offered through the City of Springfield Office of Community Relations and will begin in February 2026. The Springfield Minority Business Institute will provide targeted instruction, access to resources, and networking opportunities aimed at strengthening minority-owned enterprises and nonprofits across the community.

“The Springfield Minority Business Institute reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for all entrepreneurs to succeed,” said Mayor Buscher. “By connecting minority-owned businesses and nonprofits with the tools, knowledge, and relationships they need, we are strengthening our local economy and investing in the future of our community.”
The 2026 program will take place on Wednesdays from February through March, with classes held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The institute will conclude with a graduation ceremony on April 1, 2026, at the University of Illinois Springfield.
During the first three weeks of the program, participants will receive instruction from City of Springfield departments, including the Office of Planning and Economic Development, Building and Zoning, and Purchasing. A session on February 25 will feature a discussion led by the Springfield Urban League. Program sessions are intended to provide insight into city processes, compliance requirements, and opportunities for engagement with municipal government.
Classes on February 4, 11, 18, and 25 will be held at the Community Room at Fire Station 6, located at 2121 S. 11th Street. The March 4 session will take place at the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, followed by a March 11 class at the University of Illinois Springfield School of Business and Management. The March 18 session will be hosted at Innovate Springfield.
Minority business owners and nonprofit organizers interested in participating are encouraged to apply. Applicants may contact the City of Springfield Office of Community Relations at 217-789-2270 or email Shaun Reidell at shaun.reidell@springfield.il.us with their contact information and details about their organization.
City officials said the Springfield Minority Business Institute is part of the City’s broader effort to promote inclusive economic development and support local businesses and nonprofit organizations throughout the community.
