November is a natural time for reflection, and growing research shows that practicing gratitude can boost both emotional and physical health. A daily moment of thankfulness may help lower blood pressure, improve sleep, and even support digestion.
According to the SIU School of Medicine, stress can wreak havoc on gut health—but simple shifts in mindset, such as keeping a gratitude journal or expressing appreciation to others, can calm the nervous system and aid overall well-being. Springfield’s Center for Mind-Body Medicine offers occasional workshops and meditations focused on healing through awareness and gratitude.
At the same time, it’s the season of big meals and busy kitchens. Nutrition educators with the University of Illinois Extension – Sangamon County recommend eating mindfully during holiday gatherings. That means slowing down, focusing on flavor, and paying attention to when you feel full—without guilt.
This month, try turning “thanksgiving” into a daily practice, not just a holiday. Whether it’s a note, a prayer, or a quiet pause, gratitude may be one of the simplest and most powerful wellness tools we have.
