The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office and Springfield Police are urging the community to take precautions to safeguard their homes, gifts, and peace of mind from a seasonal increase in property crimes.

To help residents stay safe, officers recommend the following tips:

Package Deliveries: Track online orders, have packages delivered to an alternate address, or use a secure package lockbox to prevent theft.

Shopping Safety: Keep valuables out of sight and secure them in the trunk of your car while shopping. Once home, promptly remove all valuable items from your vehicle and bring them inside.

Holiday Travel: If traveling, notify your local police department to arrange a vacation home check. Ensure mail does not accumulate by placing a temporary hold on deliveries until you return.

Officers also remind residents to enhance home security by ensuring doors and windows are locked, installing outdoor lighting, and using security cameras or doorbell systems when possible. These measures can deter potential burglars and provide additional peace of mind during the holidays.

The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office advises residents to remain cautious when sharing travel plans or posting about holiday purchases on social media. Oversharing can inadvertently alert potential thieves to empty homes or valuable items inside. Adjust privacy settings and limit public posts to help protect your property.

Additionally, Springfield Police are increasing patrols in high-traffic shopping areas and neighborhoods throughout the holiday season. Officers encourage residents to report suspicious activity, such as unfamiliar vehicles or individuals lingering near homes, to authorities immediately. Acting quickly can help prevent crimes and keep neighborhoods safe.
