Illinois House Republicans are criticizing the Pritzker Administration following the announcement of a projected $3.2 billion budget deficit for fiscal year 2026 (FY26). The deficit comes despite a $1 billion tax increase in FY25 and has led the administration to request state agencies propose program and operational cuts.
State Representative Mike Coffey called for reducing wasteful spending to prevent further financial strain on Illinois taxpayers.“Illinois has the potential to grow in key areas, but the majority party needs to cut wasteful spending to move our state forward,” said Coffey. “Taxpayers in Illinois have become an ATM machine due to failed policies, and the state’s budget needs to represent what’s best for the people of Illinois.”
House Minority Leader Tony McCombie emphasized the need for transparency in the budget review process.“House Republicans support the ongoing budget review process led by the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget (GOMB),” said McCombie. “However, we urge the Administration to share the results of these exercises transparently with legislators and appropriation committees. For too long, the Majority Party has shielded critical budget details, preventing lawmakers from making informed decisions about how to address these challenges.”
Republicans argue the deficit highlights a reliance on temporary federal COVID-19 relief funds and unsustainable spending priorities. Major cost drivers include Medicaid expansions, increased funding for education and public safety reforms, and rising health insurance costs.
The legislative veto session has concluded, with lawmakers set to return for the Lame Duck Session early next year.
