Agriculture plays a central role in Illinois’ economy, with farming and agribusiness supporting jobs, local communities and the state’s broader workforce. Education in agriculture helps prepare students for a wide range of careers, from production and processing to technology and business, while also connecting classroom learning to real-world opportunities.
In many communities, agricultural education programs also provide students with hands-on experience through coursework and organizations such as FFA and 4-H. Those programs can introduce students to career paths they may not otherwise consider, while building practical skills, leadership experience and connections to local industries.
Access to those opportunities can vary by region, with some schools offering more robust programming than others. Efforts to better understand and expand agricultural education aim to ensure students across Illinois have similar opportunities to explore the field.
State Sen. Doris Turner has passed a measure through the Illinois Senate aimed at increasing access to agricultural education programs across the state.
“Our state’s agriculture industry provides various paths that can lead to good-paying jobs,” said Turner (D-Springfield). “Students deserve to have the opportunity to see the number of avenues within the ag industry.”
Senate Bill 3226 would require the Illinois State Board of Education to submit a report on the status and availability of agricultural education programs statewide. The report would examine trends, challenges and barriers, opportunities for expansion, and recommendations to better align agricultural education with workforce and post-secondary opportunities in agriculture and agribusiness.
Turner has previously supported efforts to expand agriculture education. House Bill 2802 allows students to participate in work-based learning activities, such as FFA and 4-H, that can count toward the daily calculation of school hours. Senate Bill 1605, passed last year, ensures agriculture education teachers are compensated for additional hours worked.
“I’ve seen students who joined FFA after taking one agricultural education course,” said Turner. “When we expand access to the programs available, we are helping shape our future ag leaders.”
Senate Bill 3226 passed the Senate with bipartisan support.
