The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with State Representative Mike Coffey and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The local drop-off event will take place at the KC Hall, located at 2200 Meadowbrook in Springfield.
The nationwide initiative encourages residents to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription medications to prevent misuse, accidental ingestion, and environmental harm caused by improper disposal. The event will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs, but not syringes, sharps, or illicit substances. Liquid medications should remain sealed in their original containers with tightly secured caps to avoid leakage.
“Unused or expired medications are a hidden danger in many homes,” said Sheriff Paula Crouch. “By taking part in events like this, we are helping prevent misuse and accidental ingestion. I’m proud to partner with Representative Coffey and the DEA to make it easier for Sangamon County residents to safely clear out their medicine cabinets.”
For more than a decade, Take Back Day has provided Americans with an easy and anonymous way to clear out old or unneeded medications. The DEA and its local partners have removed nearly 10,000 tons of medication from circulation nationwide since the program began.
“The Sheriff and I are excited to be hosting this event that aims to safeguard our communities,” said Coffey. “The event is free and easy, just drive up and drop off your prescription medications to our volunteers.”
