A widely purchased brand of shredded cheese sold at major retailers—including Walmart and ALDI—has been recalled across 31 states after the manufacturer determined that certain products may contain metal fragments. The voluntary recall affects more than 260,000 cases of cheese distributed nationwide, including shipments to Illinois.
The recall was issued by Great Lakes Cheese Co. of Ohio and covers a variety of shredded cheese products, such as low-moisture part-skim mozzarella, Italian blends, pizza blends, and mozzarella mixed with provolone or parmesan. The majority of the recalled items involve shredded mozzarella, which accounts for nearly 236,000 of the affected cases.
Federal regulators have classified the recall as a Class II event, meaning there is a potential—though not likely—risk of temporary or medically reversible health problems. If metal fragments are present, consumers could experience injuries such as chipped teeth or cuts to the mouth, throat, or digestive system.
Retailers have begun removing the products from shelves, and customers are encouraged to check their refrigerators for any recently purchased shredded cheese that may be part of the recall. While no injuries or illnesses have been reported, officials advise consumers to dispose of any affected packages or return them to the store for a refund.
