Springfield police responded to the scene of a possible homicide early Sunday morning in the 400 block of South Illinois Street. Upon arrival, officers located 29-year-old Telley Palmer of Columbus, Ohio, suffering from approximately 12 gunshot wounds. He was transported by ambulance to Springfield Memorial Hospital for treatment but did not survive. Palmer was pronounced deceased at 3:35 AM by the emergency room staff, shortly after his arrival.
Detectives and crime scene services arrived to investigate, locating approximately 35 shell casings at the scene. It was determined that at least three different firearms were used during the incident, one of which was recovered. Ballistic testing is ongoing.
An autopsy was conducted on Monday, and the death remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner and the Springfield Police Department.
