Rising 132 feet above Washington Park, the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon continues to serve as one of Springfield’s most unique and cherished landmarks. With 67 cast bronze bells and a legacy rooted in both generosity and global inspiration, the carillon has stood for more than six decades as a symbol of music, community, and culture in Sangamon County.

The carillon was a gift from former Illinois State Senator Thomas Rees, who left $200,000 in his will for its construction. Rees, who served as publisher of the Illinois State Register, developed an appreciation for carillons during his travels in Europe and envisioned bringing that experience home to Springfield. His will specified that the structure be built in Washington Park and include at least 49 bells.

Completed and dedicated in June 1962, the tower was designed by architect Bill Turley and built under the direction of the Springfield Park District. The bells were cast in the Netherlands by the world-renowned foundry Petit & Fritsen.

Today, the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon is among the largest of its kind in the world. The bells are played by hand using a clavier, allowing skilled carillonneurs to perform everything from classical compositions to contemporary music. The tower itself features three observation decks, offering visitors sweeping views of Washington Park and the surrounding city.

Each year, the carillon hosts a variety of public events. Among the most notable is the International Carillon Festival, which draws renowned performers from around the world. The 63rd annual festival is scheduled for May 22–25, 2025, and will include nightly concerts, a fireworks display, and performances by local artists. Later in the year, the Art Spectacular fine art fair will return to the park on September 13–14, combining visual art with live music in the shadow of the carillon.

As the schedule of events continues to grow, organizers encourage residents and visitors to stay informed. Details about upcoming concerts, festivals, and tower tours can be found on the official website at carillon-rees.org or by following the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon Facebook page.
