Three Injured in Early Morning Springfield Shooting

On July 21, 2024, at approximately 1:04 a.m., Springfield Police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2100 block of South 15th Street. Upon arrival, officers located two males who had been shot. The victims directed officers to a house, and as officers approached, they observed rifle casings in the yard.

Officers attempted to make contact; however, the residents were uncooperative and barricaded the door. On-duty SPD Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) members attempted to establish communication with the subjects in the house over a loudspeaker. After an extended period of time attempting to communicate with occupants, a subject shot at officers from inside the residence. The shots struck a rescue vehicle occupied by multiple SPD officers. Additional gunfire came in the direction of officers, again striking the rescue vehicle, at which time an officer returned fire.

Attempted communication resumed, and a subject emerged from the residence, advising a subject within the residence had a gunshot wound. ERT, accompanied by a trauma doctor assigned to the team, made entry to the residence, secured all subjects, and rendered aid to the injured individual. He was transported to a local Springfield hospital for treatment, his injuries are considered to be non-life threatening. No officers were injured during the incident.

The two shooting victims who initially alerted officers to the suspect’s location were transported to Springfield area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Per state law and department policy, Illinois State Police were contacted to complete an independent investigation. This is an ongoing investigation, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
