This story is part of Weekend on the Road, a monthly series highlighting Midwest getaways within six hours of Sangamon County. Each month, we’ll feature a new destination that’s close enough for a quick trip — and just far enough to feel like you’re really away.

This month, we’re heading to Metropolis, Illinois – the official “Hometown of Superman.” Located just under a 4-hour drive south of Springfield, Metropolis is a must-visit for superhero fans, especially with National Superhero Day on April 28th.

The heart of the town features a towering 15-foot bronze Superman statue, perfect for snapping memorable photos with the iconic superhero. Don’t miss the Superman Museum, which houses a fascinating collection of memorabilia, from vintage comics and rare toys to movie props. After exploring the museum, make your way to nearby Fort Massac State Park for outdoor activities and a peek into the area’s history.

To get there from Springfield, take I-55 South to I-24 West, and follow the signs for Metropolis. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or introducing the kids to Superman’s legacy, Metropolis offers a fun and meaningful way to celebrate National Superhero Day. Plan your trip and honor the heroes who inspire us all!
