[This story is part of Weekend on the Road, a monthly series highlighting Midwest getaways within six hours of Sangamon County. Each month, we’ll feature a new destination that’s close enough for a quick trip — and just far enough to feel like you’re really away.]
The Amana Colonies, a collection of seven villages in Iowa, offer a charming and serene weekend retreat. Known for their strong German heritage, the Colonies are home to unique shops, artisanal food, and historic buildings that take you back in time. It’s the perfect destination for those looking to enjoy a slower pace of life and immerse themselves in cultural history.
To reach the Amana Colonies from Springfield, head west on I-72, then take I-74 north through Peoria, eventually switching to US-6 and heading straight to the Amana Colonies. The 3.5-hour drive allows for a peaceful transition from the city to the countryside.
While in the Amana Colonies, you can visit the Amana Heritage Museum to learn about the community’s fascinating history, then explore the many local artisan shops, which feature everything from handmade furniture to pottery. The area is also known for its traditional German foods, and you won’t want to miss dining at one of the local restaurants like The Ox Yoke Inn. For a touch of nature, the nearby Amana Nature Trail offers a lovely spot to walk or bike while enjoying the surrounding scenery.
There are plenty of cozy inns and historic accommodations in the Colonies, which offer a peaceful atmosphere perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.
