[This story is part of Weekend on the Road, a monthly series highlighting Midwest getaways within six hours of Sangamon County. Each month, we’ll feature a new destination that’s close enough for a quick trip — and just far enough to feel like you’re really away.]

Located along the Great River Road, Grafton offers stunning bluffs, charming riverfront views, and a relaxed pace. Known for its wineries, wildlife, and scenic landscapes, Grafton is the perfect destination for those looking to escape to nature without traveling far. Whether you’re enjoying the view from a riverboat cruise, hiking through the bluffs, or tasting local wines, Grafton has something for everyone.

To get to Grafton, take I-55 north to the Route 100 exit and follow the signs to the town. The 2-hour drive offers a peaceful journey through Illinois farmland, with plenty of natural beauty to appreciate along the way.

Once in Grafton, you’ll want to check out the local wineries, including Piasa Winery, which boasts beautiful views of the Mississippi River. For outdoor enthusiasts, the nearby Pere Marquette State Park offers miles of hiking trails, especially stunning in the fall when the foliage changes colors. Don’t miss a boat tour of the Mississippi River, which allows you to appreciate the bluffs from a different perspective.

Grafton is home to several charming bed-and-breakfasts and cozy inns, making it the perfect place to relax after a day of wine tasting and hiking.
