September is recognized nationally as Healthy Aging Month, a time to highlight the importance of staying active, connected, and engaged as we grow older. Here in Sangamon County, older adults have many ways to keep their bodies and minds strong—while building community along the way.

The Springfield Senior Center on East Mason Street offers a wide range of programs including Tai Chi, gentle fitness classes, card games, and nutrition workshops. Meanwhile, organizations like AgeLinc (the Area Agency on Aging for Lincolnland) provide helpful services including Medicare counseling, transportation assistance, and caregiver support.

Falls are a leading cause of injury among seniors, and local physical therapists recommend staying active to improve balance and muscle strength. The YMCA of Springfield offers low-impact water aerobics and Silver Sneakers programs geared specifically toward older adults.

Healthy aging isn’t just about avoiding illness—it’s about living fully. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, joining a walking group, or simply connecting with others at community events, small steps now can lead to better quality of life in the years ahead.
